Google Analytics 4 is here. We’ll show you how to make your current GA tracking code (gtag.js) work with Google Analytics 4 so you don’t have to setup a new one or reinstall a new script. We’ll also show you how to find your new GA4 tracking code in case you’ve already set it up or are starting out fresh.
If you already have Google Analytics setup but haven’t upgraded to GA4 yet, the following instructions will help you migrate your current Google Analytics setup into the new GA4 setup.
1) Already have Google Analytics setup and installed?
Make your old Google Analytics tracking code (gtag.js) work in Google Analytics 4
In the Account column, make sure that your desired account is selected. (If you only have one Google Analytics account, it will already be selected.)
In the Property column, select the Universal Analytics property that currently collects data for your website.
In the Property column, click GA4 Setup Assistant. It is the first option in the Property column.
Click Get started under I want to create a new Google Analytics 4 property.
If your site uses the gtag.js, tag, you have the option to Enable data collection using your existing tags.
2) Setting up Google Analytics for the first time?
If you’re setting up Google Analytics or GA4 for the first time, the following instructions will show you how to find the Google Analytics 4 tracking code (gtag.js
In the Account column, make sure that your desired account is selected. (If you only have one Google Analytics account, it will already be selected.)
In the Property column, select “Data Streams.”
Then click on your website (or if you haven’t added it yet, click the blue “Add Stream” button and select “Web”
In the second section down titled “Tagging instructions,” click the “Global site tag (gtag.js)” option
Here you’ll find your Google Analytics tracking code, which you can copy and paste.
